Basics of Dog Training

dalmationTraining one’s dog is just not for the sake of some task or aim. The act of training a dog can also go a long way towards improving a dog’s perception level and ability to respond effectively towards commands. It is not only the responsibility of a dog owner to provide his dog with the essentials of dog training but is also an instrumental approach towards making the dog even more lovable and attractively enjoyable  house pet. Through the course of training, the bond between master and his canine is also magnified to a positively wanted level.

Every well mannered dog should be able to obey and respond to basic commands. These commands and familiarization of the canine towards them can be done so through the endeavor of dog training. So, in order to train your dog in these actions, keep on reading. The basic commands that a dog needs to be trained in are:

1. Sit

In order to train your dog to sit, all you need to do is take a treat or edible preferred by the canine Hold this edible in proximity to the dog’s head. Once the dog starts to follow the food with its eyes, it will automatically assume a position similar to sitting by tilting its head backwards. Say in a firm voice “Sit” once the dog starts to bend its legs. Once the dog fully assumes the sitting position, reward it with the edible treat. Keep up with this practice until the dog understands the command. Once done, you can then remove the food related incentive.

2. Down

In this step, you need to repeat the stages mentioned in the previous step. Do so up to the point where the dog starts to lower itself. Once it does so, say “Down “in a firm voice. Put your hand over the area above the dog’s head and push downwards. Once the dog is fully lying down, reward it with the treat. Repeat for effect daily and once the dog is fully familiarized, you may then stop giving the treat.

3. Stay

In this step, put a leash on your dog. After you get the dog to assume the down position, gradually move away from the dog while remaining eye contact. Tell it in a firm voice to “Stay”. If the dog obeys the command then reward with praise or a treat. Repeat punctually and frequently to get the desired effect. In time, the dog will be able to remain in the stay position for longer periods.

4. Release

Once the dog learns to stay, move away from it. Now hold up a treat and beckon the dog to break its stay position and come towards you. Use “Ok” or any other verbal command of your choice. Reward the dog’s compliance with a treat or praise.

5. Come

In order to ensure that the dog now knows how to sit and stay, move away from it and beckon it with your hand. Emit the verbal command “Come”. Once the dog reaches you, tell it to sit and then reward it with a treat.
